January 17th -18th 2026
Join the New Bern Outdoor Adventure Club (NBOAC) for our Annual Neusiok Trail Hike on Saturday January 17th!!
The NBOAC’s annual Neusiok Trail adventure has always been a great opportunity to shake off the stress and extra pounds of the holidays ,stretch those legs and get back in the good graces of mother nature!
New for 2026 – This year's Neusiok trip will be divided as two separate hikes for two different hiking experiences!
Part One: 6.2 mile Day Hike to the Neusiok Copperhead Shelter- Saturday January 17th
We'll meet at the NC-306 Neusiok TrailHead (Cherry Branch Minnesott Ferry Road) and step off at 9:30 am and hike to the Cottonmouth Shelter with a return back to the NC-306 Neusiok trailhead parking lot. NBOAC will provide a lead hiker and a sweeper for this trip. This segment of the trail is a moderate hike with some incline/declines, with small sections of wet terrain, tree stumps/roots and boardwalks so good footwear is highly recommended. The total hiking distance is approximately 6.2 miles (3.1 miles each way) and will take about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. A few small breaks will be taken as needed with extended breaks at the shelter for rest/refreshment break. Note: There are no indoor restroom facilities available at the NC-306 Neusiok trailhead or Copperhead shelter.
Part Two: Afternoon Hike/Overnight Backpacking Trip - Saturday January 17th - Departure Sunday morning January 18th.
The second trip will start after the completion of the first hike. Those that are interested in the second part will meet at the NC-101 Neusiok trailhead. Step off time should be between 12:30 and 1:00 PM (time dependent on return of the first trip morning hikers). NBOAC will provide a lead hiker and a sweeper for this trip. This is a short easy hike approximately 1 mile to the Dogwood shelter where the backpackers will camp overnight. Backpackers will depart Sunday morning and hike back to the NC-101 Neusiok trailhead parking lot. Note: There are no indoor restroom facilities available at the NC-101 Neusiok trailhead or Dogwood shelter.
Each hiker will be responsible for their own equipment and food, and will need to be self-sufficient. Remember, there is NO water at the shelters (the pumps have been removed). Plans will be made to have extra water available to backpackers at Dogwood Shelter. Note that sections of the Neusiok trail can be wet and swampy – good quality hiking boots or trail runners is highly recommended.
Hikers will be responsible for their own transportation to the NC-306 (Cherry Branch Minnesott Ferry Road) Neusiok Trail Head parking lot and NC 101 Neusiok Trail Head parking lot.
RSVP for overnighters is requested. RSVP for day hikers is HIGHLY encouraged, but not required.

Join us for a backpacking trip on the Uwharrie trails on Friday February 14th thru Monday February 17th.
The Uwharries are the oldest mountains on the eastern seaboard and waaayyyy back when that's where you went to go to the beach!.
The way this trip works is Friday (14th) afternoon we will park at a nearby trailhead, hike up the mountain and set up camp, have dinner and enjoy a splendid sunset, maybe a campfire (sorry, no cobbler. Maybe some Jiffy-Pop?), After a warm and restful night's sleep we'll get up, have breakfast, enjoy the sunrise, break camp and head back down the mountain to the trailhead. From the trailhead we'll drive to a different spot and repeat. Each day's hike will be about 4 miles each way. Friday night we'll stay at the top of Little Long Mt, Saturday night at Crystal's Palace, and Sunday night on Dark Mountain. There is a shelter at Little Long and Crystals Palace if you choose, but be sure to bring a tent/tarp/hammock in case the shelter is full.
All backpackers will meet Friday, February 14th at the BoJangles in Troy (corner of E Main St/Albemarle Rd and S Bilhen Rd) at Noon (12:00). If you want to have lunch there please do so early as the all attending will be heading to the trailhead no later than 12:30 PM.
This will be a fully self-supported trip. All hikers will be required to be self-sufficient; proper clothing and equipment for the weather, food, water, etc. If you need gear please let the POC know and arrangement can probably be made to locate what you're looking for. Our nightly campsites will be near streams and there will be water sources along the trail so filtering of some type will be needed.
This will be a backcountry experience so all 7 Leave No Trace principles will be adhered to.
RSVP is requested, but not required.
